A Complete Guide to Worshipping on the Day of Arafah — With Authentic Duas

The Day of Arafah is one of the most blessed days in the entire Islamic calendar. It is the day on which Allah perfected the religion, completed His favour upon the believers, and chose Islam as their way of life. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah." (Sahih Muslim 1348)

This guide walks you through a practical, step-by-step plan for making the most of this sacred day — from the night before until sunset — followed by authentic duas from the Sunnah that you can recite throughout the day.

The Night Before — Prepare Yourself

Sleep early so you can wake refreshed and make the most of every blessed hour. The righteous would prepare for great days of worship by resting well, just as the traveller prepares provisions before a long journey.

Before Fajr — Begin With Night Prayer

Wake up before Fajr, pray two rak'ahs of night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl) and Witr, then have suhoor and head to the mosque before the Adhan if possible. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The closest the Lord is to His servant is in the last part of the night." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3579)

Fajr — The Opening of a Blessed Day

Repeat the Adhan after the muadhin, remembering the great reward for doing so. Between the Adhan and Iqamah, pray the two Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr — the Prophet ﷺ said: "The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and all it contains." (Sahih Muslim 725)

Make dua between the Adhan and Iqamah, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "The supplication made between the Adhan and the Iqamah is not rejected." (Sunan Abu Dawud 521, Sunan al-Tirmidhi 212)

Waiting for the prayer brings the angels' supplication of forgiveness for you, and you are considered in a state of prayer as long as you are waiting for it. Rejoice in the reward of saying the opening Takbir (Takbirat al-Ihram) and praying in congregation — you are under Allah's protection all day.

After Fajr — The Golden Hour

Recite the morning adhkar after Fajr and after every prayer throughout the day.

Stay in your prayer spot until sunrise. Use this time for seeking forgiveness (istighfar), sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and reading Quran. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rak'ahs, will have a reward like that of Hajj and Umrah, complete, complete, complete." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 586)

About 15 minutes after sunrise, pray two rak'ahs of Ishraq (Sunrise Prayer) to earn — by Allah's will — the reward described above.

Mid-Morning — Duha Prayer

The two rak'ahs of Ishraq suffice for Duha prayer, but you may also pray Duha later during its best time — the prayer of the penitent (Salat al-Awwabin) — around mid-morning. The time for Duha extends until about an hour before Dhuhr.

Throughout the Day — Dhikr and Remembrance

Increase in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) throughout the day. It is the greatest aid in worship and brings peace to the heart. Allah says: "Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Quran 13:28)

Fill your day with Takbir (الله أكبر), Tahlil (لا إله إلا الله), Tahmid (الحمد لله), and Tasbeeh (سبحان الله). The Prophet ﷺ said: "There are no days that are greater before Allah or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so increase in Tahlil, Takbir, and Tahmid during them." (Musnad Ahmad 5446)

Prayers on Time — A Pillar of the Day

Pray every obligatory prayer on time, as it is among the best deeds. Also, pray the regular Sunnah prayers (rawatib) — the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever is regular with twelve rak'ahs of Sunnah prayer, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 414)

Dua on the Day of Arafah — The Heart of the Day

Arafah is a day of divine gifts, and its best moments are the last ones. The fasting person's dua at the time of breaking the fast is not rejected, but keep making dua all day, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah."
— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3585

Beg Allah humbly, increase in dhikr until sunset (as the Prophet ﷺ did), and ask for everything your heart desires — for yourself, your family, and the entire Ummah.

Authentic Duas From the Sunnah for the Day of Arafah

The following are powerful supplications narrated in authentic hadith that are especially befitting on this blessed day:

1. The Greatest Dua of Arafah

"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things capable."

— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3585 · The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah, and the best thing that I and the Prophets before me have said is: Laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'alaa kulli shay'in qadeer."

2. The Supplication of Prophet Yunus

"There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3505 · The Prophet ﷺ said: "The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Yunus) when he supplicated while in the belly of the whale — no Muslim supplicates with it for anything except that Allah answers him."

3. The Master of Seeking Forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar)

"O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I abide by Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You."

— Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 · The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says it during the day with firm belief in it, and dies on that day before evening comes, will be among the people of Paradise."

4. Seeking Refuge From Four Things

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of the Fire, from the trials of life and death, and from the trial of the False Messiah."

— Sahih al-Bukhari 1377, Sahih Muslim 588 · The Prophet ﷺ used to teach the companions this dua just as he used to teach them a surah of the Quran.

5. Dua for Goodness in This World and the Hereafter

"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire."

6. Dua for Forgiveness and Well-Being

"O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter."

— Sunan Ibn Majah 3871 · The Prophet ﷺ said: "Ask Allah for al-'afiyah (well-being), for no one is given anything after certainty (of faith) better than well-being."

7. Dua for Steadfastness of the Heart

"O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion."

— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2140 · Anas رضي الله عنه said the Prophet ﷺ used to say this frequently.

Fasting on the Day of Arafah

For those not performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah carries tremendous reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Fasting on the Day of Arafah, I hope from Allah, expiates for the sins of the year before it and the year after it." (Sahih Muslim 1162)

Make the Most of Every Moment

The Day of Arafah comes once a year. Pour your heart into worship, recite these duas with sincerity, and trust that Allah — the Most Generous, the Most Merciful — will not turn you away empty-handed. As the sun sets, know that Allah descends to the nearest heaven and says to the angels: "Be My witnesses that I have forgiven them." (Sahih Ibn Hibban 3853)

May Allah accept our fasting, our prayers, and our supplications on this blessed day. Ameen.
